My next project is another 12 x 12 canvas mixed media piece called “Seize the Moment”:

1 a 2 Seize the Moment (800x712)

again, I used the Sommartider paper collection from Maja Design for this piece…but I did use one beautiful piece of their Fika collection for my branches.

again if you would like to see detailed photos on how I created this piece, check out my post on the Maja Design blog HERE.

I also created a layout using this paper collection as well:

I just love this photo of my baby girl, not so much a baby anymore.

a photo tutorial on how I created this “quilted” flower can also be found on my post at Maja Design blog

I also tried out the amazing “Paper Ruffles” tutorial posted by the super talented, Gabrielle Pollacco, over at Maja Designs.

The final project I created with the Sommartider paper collection is my personal favorite:

I altered this paneled lamp shade.  I just LOVE the whimsical and girly feel to this! Every panel has a different piece of patterned paper from this collection.  And I framed each panel with some of the HUGE amount of ribbon I have been hoarding, oh, I mean collecting over the years!  I have also stepped this project out in photos on my Maja Design blog post if you would like a closer look.

Here are a few more photos of different angles of the shade:

Well, I hope that I have inspired you to create something today! and I sure appreciate you taking the time to stop by!!! TFL!

January 2013 Calendar – Maja Design January Inspiration Mood Board

January27

Every month the Maja Design blog  posts an inspirational  “Mood Board” challenge.  This month I was very inspired by the beautiful blue and brown tones and wintery feel to this month’s mood board.

Maja Design Jan 2013 Mood Board

Here is the project I created:

Jan 2013 Calendar -Maja Design

I used papers from 4 different Maja Design Collections Life by the Sea, Ska vi ta en Fika, Vintage Winter, and Sommartider.   Here is a basic photo tutorial on how I created this calendar.

DSC09146 (600x442)

I started with my basic 8 x 10 sketch journal.  Because this paper wasn’t quite as thick as I would have liked, I first prepped the surfaces of the pages with Gesso- this is basically just painting the pages with the gesso to “prime” them…this allows the use of wetter mediums such as paints, etc. and the paper becomes less porous.

DSC09148 (442x600)

and because I am not a very patient person, I use my heat gun to quicken the drying process

DSC09149 (600x449)

To create the background, I used some snowflake chipboard and plastic pieces as a mask. (purchased these snowflakes at Walmart)

DSC09151 (600x449)

I used one of my Lindy Stamp Gang mists.

DSC09153 (600x423)

DSC09157 (600x450)

I wanted the background snowflakes to be a bit more pronounced, so I drew around the snowflakes with one of my Neocolor II watercolor crayons.

DSC09158 (600x425)

After outlining the snowflakes, I went back over the outlines with a wet brush to soften the lines.

DSC09161 (600x450)

I used my 1 7/8 ” square punch to punch the squares for my calendar days.

DSC09141 (500x374)

DSC09167 (600x442)

Tip:  I used Mod Podge on the backs of the squares to adhere them to the page….my regular adhesive resists the gessoed pages for some reason, and I am not a big fan of going back and “fixing” projects that have come apart.  I distressed the edges of the squares before adhering them.

I finished up the calendar pages with some number stamps, flourishes, and snowflakes….. stamps from CTMH, Stampabilities, and 2 beautiful little butterflies created by Reneabouquets.

TFL my friends! Be sure and get over to Maja Design and enter their monthly challenges….you can win one of their amazing collections!

And how about a sneak peak of a new Maja Design collection coming soon!

Creating – What Have You Been Up To?

December12

I’ll admit it.  Ever since I decided to temporarily “retire” from Design Teams (I was losing the “fun” out of creating with so many life stressors, my full-time job, raising small children that needed more attention – not to mention the insane amount of homework they pile onto kindergarteners and 2nd graders…and life just getting in the way) my posting and my creating has slowed WAY DOWN.  Not that I am not always creating in my mind…thinking of and planning new projects…..and now I run a ART CLASS at my work with my patients every week -( well actually I have been doing that for months now, but since I am always so laxed in posting new up-dates, how would any of my fellow peeps know that?)   So here is my latest up-date to all my latest creations:

What have you been doing lately?

September16

Well…a blog post has been long over-due… I know.   But I have been sooooo busy.   I have been through almost EVERY DRAWER and EVERY CLOSET in my house…..talk about a big clean-sweep.  A few rooms to go….a final round on the garage before a “scaredy-hole” gets installed and then maybe, just maybe, I can relax for a moment and focus back on what grounds my soul…CREATING.  But in the midst of all the cleaning and organizing and general mayhem of a house with 2 small kiddos and a full-time working mommy and daddy…..I have managed to pull off a few projects……and since I am finding the rare moment to actually up-date my blog….I would like to share the projects I have completed since my last “up-date” 🙂  This is going to be a rather long post…so skim through if you don’t have the time…or sit back and relax.  AND anyone who leaves a comment, and is a current blog follower (see the subscribe 2 section on the right hand column if not already),  will be put into a drawing to win a box of paper crafting goodies…and if you have ever seen my give-aways, then you know you will not be disappointed……I’ll blog the prize just as soon as I gather it all together…I plan on stuffing a box FULL of goodness 🙂   Here we go…

So I have had a couple family birthdays over the last couple of months and here are projects I created for the special days:

Above is the creation I made for my oldest sister’s b-day….I created this on a 40 x 40 pieced together canvas …. I had to photograph my just turned 5 year old in the photo to demonstrate just how huge this piece actually is.  I used some amazing 8 x 8 papers from DCWV….some black yarn decoupaged onto the piece…some title stamps from CTMH stamped and individually cut-out.   LOVE this paper!

Above is a 16 x 20 mixed-media canvas piece I created for one of my nephews for his 10th birthday.  I used a lot of 7 Gypsies papers, some CTMH stamps….I did a ton of inking, painting, misting, masking, collaging….I just couldn’t keep up with all the supplies I used on this.

The above project is a 11 x 20 canvas project…framed by this amazing frame I purchased at Michaels (hand-painted) for my dear cousin.  I was going for a “search-a-word” type feel here… Can you see the saying? 🙂  I used an Oklahoma state map for the background (I am obsessed with maps) and used map paper to create the flowers.

The next 2 projects are art journal type pages, both 12 x 12, that I created with my kits from www.scrapsofdarkness.com – I used some stuff from both my Scraps of Darkness and Scraps of Elegance kits.

Next is a photo of the cover I created for one of my art journals (my new obsession.)

I stitched the flourished on this book cover with yarn instead of thread … and I love the added texture and dimension!

The next project I would like to share is another mixed media canvas – 16 x 20.

here are some of my Art Journal pages:

I am creating an Art Journal book for both my kids…..full of my “personal wisdom” per se lol!

whew! lol…and lastly…here is my very latest 12 x 12 art-journal style page I created with my ver August Scraps of Darkness kit:

and a few up-close shots:

Thank you for taking the time to peruse my latest creations! I appreciate each and every one of you!!! Don’t forget to leave a comment to win a great prize! 🙂 Be in it to win it! 🙂 God Bless!

Make something GREAT out of something not so GREAT

May18

I honestly cannot believe that it has been so long since I last made a post! I have been enjoying my break from Design Teams…creating projects here and there…completed a MAJOR studio rehaul… completed planting my flowers beds (which takes 22 bags of mulch if y0u can believe that)….CLEANED out the garage! yeah, it’s not perfect yet….but I am amazed at what I have accomplished….Well, I have a lot more home projects on my list to do…and I’m so motivated that I feel like I’m unstoppable! LOL! Well…I figure, if I could do what I did in our garage….really I can do ANYTHING! 🙂

Today I would like to share a project that I created for my baby girl…who will be turning 5 in just one week! Where did the time go?  I’m a little sad that I will now have both kiddos in all-day school (next Fall), but ready for it at the same time! 🙂

So, my mom stops by this Estate Sale…and picks up this lamp….well….given the right decor I’m sure it would have been lovely (maybe 🙂 ) – but it needed a complete make-over to live in my house!  AND since I broke Elizabeth’s lamp awhile back (I was cleaning her room and ooops) I thought it would be a perfect time to create her a special…..rather a magnificent lamp to fit her princess lifestyle ways! 🙂  So, that is exactly what I did!

BUT First, you must see the lamp in it’s original glory:

Well, what do you think? LOL! here is where you discover that anything is possible!

So I bought some spray paint in a lovely Robin Egg blue color….only took 1 can.  I taped the top of the lamp and the chord…took it out to the backyard….sat it on some kraft paper and voila!  Side note:  I buy kraft paper wrapping paper by the roll…and use it for all my messy projects…It works great spread out on your work table too!

I forgot to mention that I cleaned it up before I started 🙂

After I spray-painted the lamp base….I painted the detailed accents using Plaid acrylic paint in Pink Silk (I just adore the subtle pink hue to Pink Silk.)

Hopefully you can already see what a major transformation a little paint can make.  After that….I tried to come up with a solution to that hideous yellow/gold lamp shade…but to no avail…my efforts were futile.  So I had this lamp shade in my (newly clean) garage that I was saving to use for a card/chandelier project I had in mind…but it was destined for other greatness. It was time to get my flair on.  I went through all the Prima and Petaloo and Jolee and misc flowers I have been hoarding for FOREVER & my extensive buttons stash…and started getting busy with the glue gun.

I went to town with my buttons and flowers….added some pom-pom trim along the bottom….added a glittery butterfly I bought at Michaels ages ago, and adhered some of the beautiful rose trim by Webster’s Pages inside the top inside.

I also adhered some bling ribbon that I got at Walmart to “stripe” the shade.

I added some more bling to the lamp base….adhered some more of the rose trim from Webster’s Pages around the base….and there you go….my super FANCY Lamp! 🙂  I had so much fun creating this.  I used a lot of buttons and trims I have hoarded because who better to use them for but your baby girl! Now let’s just hope she doesn’t pull the “flair” off! 🙂

Well, I hope this has inspired you to create something AMAZING this weekend! and maybe see the potential in the less obvious!  Have a great weekend!  I have more projects I have completed to up-load in the coming days….but hubby has the memory card they exist on! 🙂 So stay tuned! Thanks for stopping by and taking a closer look! God Bless!

No Day But Today – 12 x 12 canvas Mixed Media piece

March25

Here is another mixed media piece that I created on a 12 x 12 canvas…I used both of my March Scraps of Darkness and March Scraps of Elegance kits together to create this.  My inspiration for this was from a gift bag that I unearthed in my great Studio clean-up of 2012 🙂 as well as an Owl based assignment from the on-line Art Journaling class that I am currently taking called The Art of Wild Abandonment!

the Scraps of Elegance March kit is full of beautiful BoBunny Country Garden papers (used one for the background here & the tree) and the Scraps of Darkness March kit is full of the amazing Graphic 45 Old Curiosity shoppe (used in my owl, some of the leaves, sun center, etc.) for complete kit ingredients please visit www.scrapsofdarkness.com or click on the links above.

Here are some up-close photos:

I made this piece for my son’s 1st grade teacher – she loves owls! I am so grateful for the amazing job she has done teaching my child this year! and most importantedly, he loves to read & he loves school!

I also used a bunch of my acrylic stamps and rub-ons that have been in my stash forever!  Projects like this are perfect to use up your stash and a great use for all those paper scraps that accumulate! TFL my friends and I hope you have a blessed and wonderful week!

Everybody Loves A Circus – Mixed Media Project

March18

We are taking the kiddos to the Shrine Circus soon….and I have to admit…I love Circuses, Carnivals, and such.  With that in mind, here is a 12 x 12 canvas, mixed media project that I created – one of the three that I am planning in a Circus series, per se.   I also entered this in CSI’s #11 challenge.

My inspiration for my hand-pieced together clown was from an illustration out of last year’s Shrine circus program, artist unknown.  I used one of the 12 x 12 canvases that I picked up from my local Michael’s – I used a 12 x 12 piece of scrapbook paper for the background…it is Ferris Wheel from Recollections.  All of the paper used for the clown was from scraps from my Scraps of Darkness kits. Here are some up-close photos:

in the above photo, I’m not sure if you can see…but I hand-stitched shoelaces onto the clown shoes…

I also used buttons and brads to embellish his outfit.

I used twine from my Pink Paislee stash for the balloon strings.

along with a plethora of my stamps, I also used a lot of rub-ons to create all the interest and texture

I also used some “Puffy” paint for extra dimension.

It’s taken me a bit to get this project up-loaded because I have just recently started the amazing Art Journaling class , The Art of Wild Abandonment…by Junelle Jacobsen via Scarlet Lime.  I have temporarily “retired” from Design Team work so that I can try out some new art and techniques….and isn’t it just the way it goes….I find that I am as busy as ever! 🙂  I really wouldn’t have it any other way!  I hope this has inspired you to create something today!!! God Bless!
